Both practical and environmental issues have been considered in the design of the building. Solar panels provide hot water for the building and thermal insulation reduces heat-loss or gain.

Sound proofing
Triple Glazing
All windows are triple glazed:

The first two layers are each 6mm thick. They are joined back to back by a transparent film that absorbs a range of sound frequencies. These first two layers are then separated from a third, 8mm layer of glazing, by 9mm of dry gas, which absorbs an entirely different range of sound.

 

Ceiling
Any noise from the flooring upstairs has to pass through a specially constructed, 33cm thick, concrete floor which incorporates micro acoustic chambers into the design. Beneath this section of flooring is a 6mm anti-impact membrane which covers the plastered and painted apartment ceiling.

Triple Glazing
The terrace floors also include heat insulation to prevent the apartment below heating up from the sun in the summer and to prevent the loss of heat during the winter.

Beneath the wooden decking of the terrace are two polyurethane water gathering layers. Under these layers is a cellular concrete layer which absorbs noise and heat and an insulating membrane film with thermal reflecting foil. Beneath this is a layer of polystyrene which provides additional thermal and noise insulation. Finally there is the plastered and painted, concrete ceiling slab.

The total cross section of these layers is half a metre deep (50cm).
